French FM: No Syria resolution in UN a 'scandal
English: Machahir123--Syrian forces killed 17 people, activists said, as they tried to crush anti-regime dissent as Arab League chief Nabil Al Arabi met President Bashar Al Assad to broker an end to the bloodshed.
Arabi carried a 13-point document outlining Arab proposals to halt the deadly crackdown, hold elections and push for reforms in the League member state.
The attempt by the 22-member pan-Arab body to resolve the festering Syria crisis takes place with the United States set to ramp up work on a UN Security Council resolution targeting Syria.
‘We’re looking at accelerating that work next week,’ US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in reference to a draft resolution likely to include sanctions.
. rance has described as a "scandal" the failure of the United Nations so far to agree a resolution against the violent crackdowns on dissidents in Syria.
"I think it's a scandal not to have a clear position of the UN in such a terrible crisis," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told reporter on Sunday on a visit to Australia. He made the comment when asked about Russian resistance to a draft resolution late last month that called for sanctions against Syrian President Bashar Assad.
