وضرب الزلزال السواحل الغربية لجزيرة "إنفركارجيل" الجنوبية، في الساعة 8:22 مساء بحسب التوقيت المحلي، كان مركزه على بعد 161 إلى الغرب من الجزيرة، بحسب مركز الرصد الجيولوجي الأمريكي، الذي يرصد الزلازل حول العالم.وشعر سكان مدينة "كريست تشورش" النيوزيلندية بالزلزال، حيث اهتزت المباني في المدينة الواقعة على بعد 240 كيلومتراً إلى الشمال من جزيرة "إنفركارجيل"، الأمر الذي أثار هلعاً بين السكان الذين هرعوا إلى الشوارع، وفقاً لما ذكرته صحيفة "نيوزيلندا هيرالد."
وأسفر الزلزال عن توقف الاتصالات الهاتفية وانقطاع التيار الكهربائي عن الجزيرة الجنوبية، بحسب الصحيفة.
وقال أحد سكان مدينة "كريست تشورش" لصحيفة هيرالد إن الزلزال كان عنيفاً جداً، مشيراً إلى أنه اضطر إلى الهرب خارج المنزل والبقاء في موقف السيارات.

"We are being enveloped with dust. It is very, very scary," Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker told New Zealand's National Radio.
